"For 20 years we’ve been designing homes that are deeply connected to the way people live, not trend-driven spaces but places of permanence.
This book became an opportunity to reflect on the ideas that have defined our work and the people who have trusted us to shape their lives. Underlying all of this is a rejection of disposability. We are less interested in what is fashionable than in what will endure: natural materials that develop character, craftsmanship that rewards close inspection, spaces that reveal themselves slowly, and homes capable of absorbing the lives of their occupants over many years.
What does permanence mean to us? We believe good design should feel calm, intuitive and enduring. This book captures not only the finished projects, but the thought-processes behind them. We think deeply about proportion, about light, materials, and how spaces support the rituals of everyday life. We see a home as a complete creative work. Where architecture, interiors, furniture, art and craft are considered together, not as separate disciplines.
There is something inherently Renaissance-like in this approach: a belief in the interconnectedness of the arts, in craftsmanship and human experience, and in the importance of proportion, materiality, beauty and permanence. Our projects are conceived in this way. A staircase can become sculpture; a light fitting can transform the emotional character of a room; a floor can become an artwork. Joinery becomes furniture, landscape enters the interior, and art is considered as integral to the architecture rather than something added once the building is complete.
Creating the book became a design project in itself. Every image, material, sequence and detail was carefully considered. We wanted the experience of holding the book to feel like entering one of our homes. Layered, textural, quietly luxurious. Something to return to over time.
Permanent Residence has been a passion project. It’s been us doing what we love, and doing the best that we can, no matter what. What we’ve realised is that, yes, it’s a reflection of the last 20 years and we’re so proud of what we’ve created, but we’re also excited about the next 20 years and what is yet to be created. We’re committed to designing the most incredible architecture and interiors for our clients. And there’s no slowing down." - Robson Rak
